Carolina Man A Dare Island Novel Virginia Kantra 9780425268872 Books

A wonderful story of the Marine Luke, his daughter Taylor, and the lawyer Kate. The principled Luke weaves his way between his responsibility to the Corps and to his daughter, a long with his growing dependence on Kate.

Taylor's secret, which has spanned three novels, is finally revealed, and the revelation compels actions and revelations from both Luke and Kate.

Kate finally faces and moves on from her past, forging relationships with both Luke and Taylor.

The rest of the Fletcher family play important roles in this story, as well. The author skillfully blends all these elements up into a satisfying story.

Carolina Man A Dare Island Novel Virginia Kantra 9780425268872 Books Reviews

I’ll start by saying Virginia Kantra is one of my favorite authors and I thoroughly enjoyed this novel.

While Carolina Man followed most romance fiction conventions (physically attractive, sexy H & H with strong chemistry, some inner demons, a HEA), I liked both the hero and the heroine and their friends / family. The characters had depth, they communicated like people that cared about themselves and each other and they acted like real people. I cared what happened to them and stayed up real late to finish the book because I couldn’t put it down.
This is a wonderful story of a soldier in a difficult situation, finding out while stationed overseas in a war zone that he is a parent of an eleven year-old girl whose mother has just died. Luke pulls his new life together and finds a way to win his daughter's heart as well as the heart of the lawyer who represents the dead mother's interests. This is an emotionally charged story that does not fail to continue the rich storyline of the earlier Dare Island series. You will find yourself involved and caring about this courageous and loving family as you go through their troubles and triumphs. Well done, Virginia Kantra!
Fanfreakinfabulous!!!!

I LOVED...I have been waiting it seems forever for Luke's book. It was so so so worth it. I even tried to wait...then savor BUT I needed to read!

Luke has been deployed but finding out he has a ten year old from a lawyer was a shocker. Taylor's mom dies and her world is turned upside down, thrust into this amazing yet unknown family was hard.

We follow Luke's journey into becoming a father at the same time he is falling for the lawyer Kate, who knew Taylor's mom Dawn. There is a heart wrenching twist with Dawn's family that was tough and well written.

I absolutely loved this third installment of this series and I'm tickled there will be another book.

Virginia Kantra is turning into a fave of mine!!!
If you love contemporary romance...THIS is a MUST READ!!!!
Love this series! When Luke comes home from Afghanistan, he's got to face one of the biggest challenges of his life, getting to know his ten-year-old daughter, the one he didn't know he had until recently. As he struggles to bond with her, he also finds himself falling for lawyer, Kate Dolan. She's been a tremendous help to him and he's falling for her fast. But Kate's childhood makes her fearful of getting involved, afraid of getting close to anyone. When she meets all of Luke's family, however, she gets a glimpse of what she's always wanted. Does she have the courage to take a chance on Luke, on love, on the three of them forming their own family? Great story. Love the character development, the way each one grows and progresses, overcoming trials, dealing with their own faults and weaknesses. It's one of the reasons the author's books grab you is that you fall in love with her characters. She also has a way of touching your emotions with the story she's telling. Can't wait to read the next one!
I enjoyed this book a lot. I don't know if the author actually has experience as an adult child of an alcoholic, or if Kate is the result of extensive research, but the characterization is spot on. That sense of never fitting in, the stress about bringing flowers to a family event (Kate thought her poinsettia bouquet was too big for the table), etc. all resonated with me. Her caution, her self-protectiveness, and her grit and strength made her an incredibly memorable character.

Luke proved to be all too human as we see him grappling with the needs of the daughter he has to get to know. His internal struggles as he tries to be a good dad to Taylor were very touching. I also love the scene in which Luke finally begins to see his parents as separate human beings, not just "mom and dad".

Not to be forgotten, the relationship between Lukes parents, Tom and Tess, is also a joy to behold as they worry about their grown kids, and are still very much in love after forty years.

"Real" people populate this series, and this book in particular. This is the kind of series that makes me feel like I could go visit all of these fictional characters on Dare Island (unfortunately, also fictional!) and enjoy a very tight, loving family. "Back to back to back!" (That's how I'm going to read this series when all of its books have been published.)
The first two books were good and I guess it was too much to expect the third to be as good. Hats off to the author for trying to change it up a bit though. The content was darker with background stories of abuse that are well handled. I liked the H very much - he is a war-toughened marine coming home to check on his newly discovered daughter (she is 10 years old and he was never told about her by his ex-girlfriend) but he ultimately wants to go back to active service. The h is the family lawyer friend of his ex-girlfriend. The h is an extremely awkward character but I quite liked her. The story was difficult and hard to read because there were so many pitfalls along the way. The mistake I believe the author made was in being too heavy handed about the villain (way too obvious) and the whole finale with the H being in on the final confrontation was too cheesy. I also have an objection about the fact that we never find out (throughout the series) or are given a hint as to why the H's ex never felt obliged to tell him about his daughter yet feels free for no apparent reason, to name him as the guardian of their daughter.
