Maud Martha Gwendolyn Brooks 9780883780619 Books Reviews

contents of book fine. advertised as "like new"; that was not the case. condition was good, except there was a sticky residue on cover of book, as well a a large inventory sticker on the back cover of the book, which if removed would have torn the cover. as the wise man said, "caveat emptor".
Book is in perfect condition. Great book so far.
Maud Martha is a novel written as a series of prose poems. Each of the thirty-four short chapters reads like a separate vignette or prose-poem about a young woman coming into a spiritual awakening. This young woman is Maud Martha, and the language, deeply poetic, reveals the mind-set of this young woman who loves beauty more than anything, and yet has to come to terms with all the ugliness of a world marred by racial discrimination, distant husbands, and the everyday disappointments of life. It's a wonderful, expressive book, unlike any I've ever read, and certainly an important book, for what it manages to achieve structurally, thematically and artistically. The poetic structure and language of the book plays perfectly to the mindset of a young woman who thinks in terms of beauty, and the way the chapters build up on each other to create a sort of musical novella is unlike anything writers were doing when Brooks was writing, or really unlike what writers have been doing since (Ali Smith may be a possible exception, and if you like the novels of Ali Smith, you're bound to like this book). This is Brooks' only novel -- if it can be called a novel -- and it is woefully overlooked. It's the kind of book that keeps you coming back to chapters, passages, and character descriptions, the way a book of poetry invites you to continually revisit favorite poems.
Such a beautiful book, a novella told poetically by one of America's pre-eminent, yet undervalued poets. It's a brief novel that takes you through the life of an ordinary, extraordinary African-American woman in midcentury. Reminded me a little of Brown Girl Dreaming and Another Brooklyn by Jacqueline Woodson. I wouldn't be surprised if Ms. Brooks was an influence.
Maud Martha is Gwendolyn Brooks’ only novel. It is uniquely written, arranged, and told in poetic scenes-- a simple style. It’s an easy read that tells the story of a young black woman growth to knowing herself and those around her. The book is almost a monolog. Maudie shares her earliest childhood memories, her courtship, and life as a married woman and mother. She is always the observer and short on intervention. Maud Martha is predictable—even when she socializes with whites and upper-class blacks. She is interested in defining black beauty as light-skinned/brown colored girls or those with long hair. Written in 1953, I’m sure this was a big discussion among other traditions of black people. A picture of Chicago is painted. The corner streets, the nightlife, apartment living, and neighborhoods come alive. You meet the people of Chi-Town and even a soldier returning from the war. The book is a sample view into the life and times of black people during the 1950s. I enjoyed reading the novella; I think you will too. I think this should be recommended reading for high school students in Illinois. I think it’s times to sample Gwendolyn Brooks.
Interesting characters that are written in a style that a poet clearly wrote.
On of my favorite books. Her use of vivid language brings the words to life. Short chapters offer vast insight into this world. A must read.
Lovely read. Sweet, innocent and thought provoking. Beautifully written. What a talent --- Ms. Brooks, thank you.
